I can
hardly believe that there are only four months remaining in this Lions year. When I last
wrote, I shared with you that the work of the Lions in support of the Impact Goals of
extension were going well. At that time, there were 21 clubs that were either chartered or
were in the process of being chartered. As normal, things slowed during the holidays and
we are now beginning to re-focus on our year end goals.
To date, the Council of
Governors and the Lions of Texas have chartered 19 clubs and are in the process of
developing 31 more clubs. I take this opportunity to extend my personal thanks
to the District Impact Coordinators and to the State and District MERLO Team members for
bringing about this Impact. When the developing clubs are chartered, we will have
extended 50 new clubs to communities that will now be able to realize the benefits of
being a part of the world's best and largest service organization. This effort, in itself,
will set a new record of growth in MD-2 Texas but, it will still leave us short of the
goal that was set to charter 58 clubs during this year.
If we look at this in a
positive way, we can see that this is an opportunity for all of us to take a look at our
surroundings and to try to identify areas within our Districts that are not being served
or that are underserved. Just think of the Impact that you could make
by working on the development of a club and the benefits that would come to that community
from the services that we the Lions provide. Be an active part of the Impact
Team and let your Governor know that you are interested in taking a working
role in the development of a new club in or near your own community.
At our recent Council of
Governors meeting in Kerrville, I asked the Governors to look toward the end of their term
but, not to focus on the negative membership numbers that we are currently experiencing,
rather to concentrate all of their efforts on the extension of new clubs
within their Districts for the four remaining months of this Lion year. In the past, it is
this period of the year that we normally experience our largest growth and I feel that
this year will be no exception. I'm sure that you have heard many times that there are no
tasks too large that we, the Lions, cannot accomplish as long as we work together as a
team. If we all keep this thought in mind and truly work as a team to extend
Lionism we will not only have kept, but possibly even surpassed, our goal of
chartering 58 new clubs and in doing so, we will have honored our commitment to our
International President and to his theme of:

Make an Impact, Not Just an Effort

At our recent
USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum hosted by the Lions of Texas in Ft. Worth, I had the
opportunity to meet with the Impact Coordinators from many areas around the world. As I
sat and listened to them tell about their progress, in support of President Fukushima's
program for growth, my chest swelled with pride knowing that the Lions of MD-2
Texas were well ahead of these other areas.
In addition to having the
Council of Governors establish the largest new growth goal in recent years of 58
clubs, we had also been the first Multiple District to have provided the training
required by Lions International in support of this program and certified Guiding Lions in
each of the 16 Districts. This was a massive task that many thought could not be
accomplished but, with the support of the Council Chairman, the Council of Governors, our
Organizational Development Manager, members of the state M.E.R.L. Team and all of the
District Coordinators, we are well on our way to meeting or even surpassing the goal that
was set. With the majority of training in place, it is now our job to see that each
District is providing the training necessary to support the new club development that is
taking place.
As of October 1, 2002, through
your concerted efforts, the Lions of Texas have or are in the process of
developing 21 clubs. It is my hope that, by Thanksgiving, we will have developed
at least 29 clubs which would be half of our goal. If each of us can work toward this end,
think of the many communities that would really be thankful for the new services they will
be receiving by our work to extend Lionism. Isn't that the reason we remain a
Lion? As long as we work as a team and continue to remain focused, there is
no goal to large that we cannot accomplish.
As we begin to plan for the
upcoming holidays, let's make sure that we put on our gift list the gift of membership in
a Lions Club. As the well known commercial states, "a diamond is forever"
but, to me, something that outlives us all are the good works we as Lions provide for
those in need and the more clubs and the more Lions serving will make this time of thanks
and giving a period that will truly live on forever.
Let's all continue to insure
that the Lions of Texas lead the way in our Association as we have for the last 85 years
and that we live the dream of our International President of:

One Heart"

| Make an Impact, Not Just an Effort By PCC Michael
"Mike" Rourke
Impact Coordinator, MD - 2 Texas
Email: PCCMIKEMD2@aol.com
This year, International President Kay K. Fukushima has asked all of the Lions to
make an Impact on our overall membership. His vision is accomplished through the
extension of new Lions Clubs and how they are developed during the 2002 - 2003 club year.
Does all of this sound
familiar? You might say yes and you might be right but, the most important
difference from this type of effort in the past compared to the current program is the
manner in which the new clubs are to be developed. In most Districts in past years your
Extension Chairman working alone or with one or two other Lions would go into an area and
go door to door talking about the development of a club in the area and the benefits that
it would bring and if the individual would like to be a part of this effort. If this
effort was successful in signing up the minimum number of Charter Members (20) a
sponsoring club would be identified and asked to provide a Guiding Lion to meet with these
new members and to assist them during their first year as a club.
Our extension programs of the
past have been very successful and have made Lions International the largest service club
organization in the world. Why then do we find a need to change our methods of
development?
Through surveys conducted over
the last ten years, by Districts and Multiple Districts, we have seen many of
our extension efforts fail within the first two years of a clubs development
for an array of reasons that can be summed up by saying that these new clubs were not
nurtured and developed with all of the resources available. After the excitement of the
Charter Night, many clubs were left alone to develop on their own. After the Guiding Lion
had completed their one year of service, the club many times had no one to continue to
assist them in their development.
Based on this information,
President Fukushima put together a group of Lions experienced with club extension that
came together to study the problems and to develop necessary solutions. PID Jimmy
Ross was asked to head up this effort in the Central and South Central portion of the U.S.
The eleven (11) states that make up this area include Texas MD-2. Subsequently, a
coordinator for each state was appointed. The Impact Coordinator for MD-2 Texas is PCC
Michael "Mike" Rourke.
The whole Impact Team
effort is designed to focus all of our manpower resources, from the Multiple
District and District, on the development of new clubs. At our recent Council of Governors
meeting, the Governors of the sixteen (16) Districts in Texas established their individual
goals. The Impact effort during 2002 - 2003 is as follows:
2-T1 3 clubs
2-T2
3 clubs
2-T3
3 clubs
2-E1
3 clubs |
2-E2 5 clubs
2-X1
3 clubs
2-X2

2-X3

2-A1 2 clubs
2-A2

7 clubs
2-S1
5 clubs |
2-S2 4 clubs
2-S3
3 clubs
2-S4
4 clubs
2-S5
5 clubs |
This commitment
and effort, when successful, will almost triple the extension of new clubs in Texas in
recent years.
What is the connection
between the Impact Team and the M.E.R.L.O. Team? Each District Governor was
asked to appoint an Impact Team Leader for their district to work with the members of the
MERLO team to coordinate their efforts and to focus on New Club Extension. The personnel
of the MERLO (Membership, Extension, Retention, Leadership, and Orientation) Team will all
be used to:
| v |
Identify areas for New Club development within the District.
|
| v |
Develop the new club.
|
| v |
Provide training for the new members based
upon the MERLO team member area of expertise.
|
| v |
Encourage the importance of the new clubs
involvement and participation in District activities.
|
| v |
Work with existing clubs to encourage their
support and acceptance of the new club and its members.
|
| v |
Identify, train and certify Lions who will
make the commitment to serve as a Guiding Lion.
|
| v |
Work with the District Governor to identify
the best Guiding Lions (minimum 2) from the certified Guiding Lions in the District to
work with each new club.
|
| v |
Insure that the Guiding Lions will remain
active and in support of the new club for a minimum of at least two (2) years. |
As we all come together,
working as a Team with the same focus and level of support for
this extension effort, MD - 2 Texas will once again lead the way in new member and club
development and insure that we remain the largest Multiple District in North America and
the strongest in the World of Lionism.

Impact Team Training
Saturday, September 7, 2002
Texas Lions Camp - Recreation Hall
Impact Team
training is scheduled for Saturday, September 7, 2002. It will take place out at the Camp
... most likely in the Recreation Hall since our anticipated attendance has grown to over
100 with representation from all 16 Districts.
The
workshop is designed to elicit open discussion from all in attendance and to provide
training materials that can be taken back to the respective districts to train locally and
to prepare the local districts for the development needed to achieve the individual goals
they set for the extension of New Clubs. This goal collectively for MD-2 Texas was 58
clubs as set during the August 1, 2002 Council Meeting.
All lodging
will be taken care of individually. DG Frank Pickens has some current pricing on rooms in
Kerrville ranging from approx. $ 50.00 - 109.00. You can contact DG Frank for these
details. The Econo
Lodge has room rates for approx. $54.95. Call 1-800-553-2666.
A
continental breakfast will be provided from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. with the
workshop beginning promptly at 10:00. Lunch will be provided (sandwiches, drinks, etc.)
but, it will be a working lunch. The training will continue straight through with the
workshop concluding at 5:15 - 5:30 pm.
All in
attendance that complete the workshop, will be recommended to the Governors that they are
eligible for certification and this will meet the requirement of Lions International to
have this completed by September 30, 2002.
